Water your lawns and landscape regularly to prevent drought stress. Bluegrass needs approximately 1.5 inches of irrigation per week in July and August. Tall Fescue needs half that amount.
Sow fall vegetables such as lettuce, radishes, turnips, beets, carrots, beans, mustard, spinach, and Chinese cabbage in the early days of August. They appreciate the cooler weather and fall rains..
Apply Fertilome Weed Free Zone in your lawn to kill weeds.
Keep weeds from going to seed by mowing, hoeing, and pulling them. Crabgrass, foxtail, purslane, and many other weeds are starting to bloom, which is followed by seed production. Next year's weed control will be MUCH easier if seed formation is prevented this year.
Harvest your pears, grapes, apples, and watermelons.
Check fruit plants for mites and apply horticultural oils or insecticidal soap to reduce population. Mites can make the leaves turn yellow, which looks similar to drought stress. Check underside of leaves closely for mite infestation.
Apple and pear trees may be pruned for growth control where it is needed. Summer pruning in early August is suggested for gaining some size control of dwarf apple trees.
Dig potatoes when the tops die or when the tubers are big enough to satisfy you.
Continue training grapes and other vining fruits to the trellis or support wires. Excessive growth can be cut back or thinned out if it helps to keep the plant under control.
Be sure your landscape beds are well mulched to retain moisture.
