Mulch, Potting Mix, Compost, Rock

Mulching is the practice of covering the soil surface with a material that smothers weeds and delays the evaporation of moisture from the soil. The right mulch can just about eliminate the need to pull weeds. Mulches also prevent the weed seeds from reaching the soil.

By covering the soil surface, mulches reduce the amount of sunlight and wind that reaches the soil, so water evaporates from the soil more slowly. The soil stays cooler, so the roots stay cooler.

A mulch derived from plants (such as grass clippings, cocoa shells, and shredded mulch) can also add organic matter to the soil, improving its structure and fertility and encouraging a healthy population of microorganisms.

We have one of the widest selections of mulch, bark chips, potting soils, compost, and specialized mixes in Omaha. Below represents some of the products we carry.

1 cu. yd. covers 300 sq.ft. 1" deep

14 bags of mulch = 1 cu. yd.

1 cu. yd. covers 150 sq.ft. 2" deep

one 2 cu. ft bag covers 12 sq. ft. 2" deep

1 cu. yd. covers 100 sq.ft. 3" deep

Cubic Yards = Length (ft) X Width (ft) X Height (in.) / 324

Standard Pick-up will hold 2 cu. yds. of mulch

Small Pick-up will hold approx. 1 cu. yd. of mulch

Bulk Mulch Example

How much mulch do I need?  If your measured area is 100 ft. long and 12 feet wide, take:

100 x 12 x 2 (two inches deep of mulch) = 2400

Divide 2400/324 = 7.41 cubic yards of mulch

Round up to 8 cubic yards to make sure you have enough.
